The beach campus itself is an ideal base for families. ![]() I can honestly say that this has been the best trip I have ever taken.. The hotel is located in San Juan de la Concepcion.. Managua airport. A driver from the hotel was there to meet me at the airport and I was able to practice, what was then, my basic spanish during the interesting drive to the hotel. The hotel itself is located down a small lane on the outskirts of San Juan. The eco hotel was the creation of owner Paulette Goudge and her influence is reflected in the design which is sympathetic to it’s environment, the eco credentials based around sustainable development, solar power and careful management of water and the beautiful, lush semi tropical gardens in which the hotel is located. For me this was the perfect environment - tranquil and away from the noise and distractions of the city. If you feel that for you clubs and bars and nightlife are essential traveling companions you may feel more at home at a school in Granada, Leon or Managua. Paulette was there to meet me, and show me to my room - a spacious bedroom with it’s own bathroom and (solar heated) shower which like all the rooms and cabins in La Mariposa has views over the extensive gardens. Food in La Mariposa is simply delicious. Everything is prepared by the team of great cooks using produce from La Mariposa itself (the hotel has it’s own hens and farm so the eggs, fruit and vegetables are often freshly collected/picked and prepared on the same day) or from local producers. The food is mostly traditional Nicaraguan - dishes prepared with fresh ingredients, mainly vegetarian and absolutely everything in my 2 months there was absolutely delicious. Fresh juices, again made in the kitchen, are served at every meal. Breakfast, possibly my favourite meal of the day wherever I am, was always excellent and consisted of fresh fruit, a hot dish, toast or cereals if you really can’t stop yourself and, of course, excellent Nicaraguan coffee. Spanish lessons, like the hotel, are of the highest quality. They are based on 1: 1 teaching so the lessons are tailored to your own experience and ability and normally consist of 2 hours of conversation and 9. For most students these take place in the morning and the classroom is likely to be in one of the thatched ranchos in the extensive grounds where the only distractions come from the monkeys, the birdlife or the staggering beauty of the surroundings. And if you arrive with no spanish at all it’s no problem because many of the teachers speak great english. And if you need a more practical language class there’s nothing to stop you and your teacher from walking into the local town to put into practice what you just learned. There is a full schedule of afternoon and weekend activities which ensure that you get to see some of the most important parts of Nicaragua - culturally and historically - and in the case of weekday activities, the cost is included in the very reasonable room/lesson rate. For weekend activities we generally paid what amounted to a small contribution to fuel for the mini- bus, lunch and entrance fees. The activities were great and left me with a much better understanding of the country, it’s history and of the people. All the money Paulette receives stays in the country - in the form of wages to the 4. Check the website for details but it’s worth noting that La Mariposa was quick to respond and continues to support a number of local families who lost their houses during recent and unusually heavy rainstorms - something that’s underplayed by Paulette but is typical of her ethos to support the local community. My trip ended on Tuesday when I was delivered back to Managua airport by one of the hotel drivers - sad to be leaving but now confidently speaking spanish, filled with admiration of Nicaragua and it’s people and the certain knowledge that I will be returning just as soon as I can.
